How to Become a Christian
 HOW TO BECOME A CHRISTIAN

Realize
You must realize that you are a sinner by nature and by choice. We are not sinners because we sin, but we sin because we are sinners. You have sinned against a holy God by breaking His commands. For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). Sin is not a small thing in the eyes of God. The ultimate punishment for sin is death. “For the wages of sin is death...” (Romans 6:23). Without divine intervention on our behalf eternal death, destruction and torment awaits us!

Recognize

You must recognize the precious price God chose to pay to bring us back to Him. In His crucifixion, Jesus Christ experienced physical torture and spiritual torment on our behalf.

  • We all went astray like sheep; we all have turned to our own way; and the Lord has punished Him for the iniquity of us all (Isaiah 53:6).
  • He Himself bore our sins in His body on the tree, so that, having died to sins, we might live for righteousness; by His wounding we have been healed (1 Peter 2:24).
  • He made the One who did not know sin to be sin for us, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him (2 Corinthians 5:21).
  • For God loved the world in this way: He gave His One and Only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send His Son into the world that He might condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through Him (John 3:16-17).
  • But God proves His own love for us in that while we were still sinners Christ died for us! (Romans 5:8).
  • You must also recognize that Jesus Christ is your only hope of salvation.

Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me” (John 14:6).

  • For there is one God and one mediator between God and man, a man, Christ Jesus, who gave Himself a ransom for all... (1 Timothy 2:5-6).
  • There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to people by which we must be saved (Acts 4:12).
  • Anyone who believes in Him is not condemned, but anyone who does not believe is already condemned, because he has not believed in the name of the One and Only Son Son of God (John 3:18).
  • The one who has the Son has life. The one who doesn’t have the Son of God does not have life (1 John 5:12).

Repent
The Bible commands us to repent. In order to completely and totally turn to Christ, you must completely and totally turn from your sin. Jesus must become both your Savior and your Lord in order for you to experience genuine salvation.

  • From then on Jesus began to preach, “Repent, because the kingdom of heaven has come near!” (Matthew 4:17).
  • Therefore repent and turn back, that your sins may be wiped out so that seasons of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord (Acts 3:19).
  • Repent and be baptized, each one of you, in the name of Jesus the Messiah for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:38).
  • Now I am rejoicing, not because you were grieved, but because your grief led to repentance... For godly grief produces a repentance not to be regretted and leading to salvation, but worldly grief produces death (2 Corinthians 12:9-10).

Receive
When we repent (turn from our lifestyle of sin) and turn to Christ as our only hope we become the recipients of God’s salvation. It is a gift that cannot be purchased or earned by our human effort. It is a gift provided only through a repentant response to the complete, ultimate sacrifice of Christ for our sin.

  • For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord (Romans 6:23).
  • He saved us - not by works of righteousness that we had done, but according to His mercy, through the washing of regeneration and renewal by the Holy Spirit (Titus 3:5).
  • But to all who did receive Him, He gave them the right to be children of God, to those who believe in His name (John 1:12).
  • If you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. With the heart one believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth one confesses, resulting in salvation... For everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved (Romans 10:9-10, 13).

We encourage you to confess your sinfulness to God; repent and turn from your sin to Jesus Christ as your personal Lord and Savior.
